Stellar mass

These black holes are the collapsed cores of giant stars, with masses of a few times that of the Sun.

Intermediate mass

The next step up is black holes that are thousands of times as massive as the Sun. Many objects may fit this category, but only a few have been confirmed.

Supermassive

These are the black hole behemoths, weighing in a few million to a few billion times the mass of the Sun. These black holes inhabit the cores of galaxies.
