NGC 300 X-1

NGC 300 X-1

An artist's concept of the NGC 300 X-1 system, showing the massive star dumping gas onto the black hole. The gas forms a small but extremely hot disk. Some of the material is funneled into strong "jets" that shoot away from the poles of the black hole. The companion star also produces strong "winds," surrounding the star with a cloud of gas.

NGC 300

A close-up of the region of NGC 300 that contains the black hole system. NGC 300 X-1 looks like a small blue star at the center of the image.

NGC 300

NGC 300, the host galaxy for the black hole. It is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor.

NGC 300 X-1

A "fly-around" of the NGC 300 X-1 system.
